RSE: Leading a New Era of Modular, Low‑Carbon Water Innovation
RSE is proud to be featured in the latest edition of Inside Sustainability, where our CEO Stephen Slessor shares how we are transforming the future of water treatment through modular engineering, low‑carbon manufacturing and nature‑based innovation.
Over the past five years, RSE has undergone one of the most significant growth phases in its history. With more than 2,000 people across 27 locations, 400,000 sq ft of manufacturing capability and a growing global footprint, we’re scaling to meet the water industry’s most pressing challenges — from aging infrastructure and climate pressures to the need for faster, greener delivery.
At the heart of our approach is a shift towards building water treatment assets in factories, not fields. Our offsite modular designs are reducing operational carbon by up to 48%, improving treatment performance through controlled manufacturing environments, and enabling critical infrastructure to be delivered at unprecedented pace and quality.
The article highlights several defining milestones, including:
- Hampton Loade, home to the UK’s largest ceramic membrane installation and an 800‑tonne carbon reduction achieved through 100% recycled green steel.
- Howden Wells, where a pioneering timber‑based modular design reduced embodied carbon by 95% and demonstrated the potential for fully circular, nature‑based water infrastructure.
- The strategic expansion of Biomatrix, enhancing our nature‑based treatment capability.
- RSE’s first North American office in Milwaukee, bringing UK‑developed modular technologies to the US market.
- A new digital supply chain platform improving transparency, innovation sharing and ESG alignment across the value chain.
As the water sector enters its largest investment cycle in modern history, RSE is positioned to help shape the next decade of progress. As Stephen reflects:
We’ve built strong foundations over the last five years, and we’re entering a decade where our capabilities are exactly what the water industry needs to be successful.
