How Do You Deliver a New Water Treatment Works to an Island?

Delivering new water infrastructure is challenging enough. Delivering it to an island introduces an entirely different set of logistical, engineering and programme constraints.

At Torra Water Treatment Works on Islay, RSE is working with Scottish Water to deliver a major upgrade designed to increase drinking water capacity, improve resilience and support future demand. The project includes 19 Transportable Treatment Units (TTU®s), manufactured and tested off site before being transported by road and ferry to the island.

What you’ll see

  • How offsite manufacturing can reduce the amount of work required on site
  • Why modular water treatment can improve quality control and programme certainty
  • How 19 TTUĀ® modules were prepared for delivery to a remote island location
  • The role of digital collaboration in connecting design, manufacturing and project teams
  • How modular delivery can support greater drinking water capacity and long-term resilience
  • The logistical planning required to move major water infrastructure by road and ferry

RSE’s offsite approach allows modules to be mechanically and electrically installed and tested in a controlled factory environment before delivery. For Torra, this approach is helping overcome both demanding programme requirements and the practical challenges of delivering critical infrastructure to Islay.
